Starting the PROM File Formatter
The PROM File Formatter can be started in the following ways.
- To start the PROM File Formatter from within the Xilinx Design Manager, click the PROM File Formatter button (shown following) in the Design Manager toolbox.

- If you installed the PROM File Formatter as a stand-alone tool on a PC, click the PROM File Formatter icon (shown in the previous figure) on the Windows desktop or select the applicable entry accessed from the Windows 95® or Windows NT® Start button.
- To start the PROM File Formatter from the UNIX or DOS command prompt, enter the following command:
promfmtr [design_name{.bit|.pdr}]
The PROM File Formatter opens in the following way:
- If you enter the command line without specifying a design_name, the PROM File Formatter opens displaying a new PROM file composed of a single empty data stream. The properties for the PROM file are the default properties.
- If you enter a design_name.bit, where design_name.bit is an existing BIT file, the PROM File Formatter opens displaying a new PROM file composed of a single data stream containing the BIT file. The file description area (the area on the right side of the window) displays the directory containing the BIT file. The properties for the PROM file are the default properties.
- If you enter a design_name.pdr, where design_name.pdr is an existing PROM description (PDR) file, the PROM File Formatter opens displaying the PROM file described by the PDR file. The file description area (the area on the right side of the window) displays the directory containing the PDR file. The properties for the PROM file are the properties set the last time the file was saved.
If you enter a design_name without an extension, the PROM File Formatter will look for the file design_name.pdr to open.
